McTribal? sliding O/TPosted by Catherine Cartwright Jones on October 2, 2001 at 05:45:21: In reply to: I think the word has changed soo much, its left me confused posted by Khoa on October 2, 2001 at 03:37:27: : and probably the new cliche in tattooing and hennaeing.I agree with that! If there is grace, genius and talent behind the patterns and postioning (ie Alex's work) or scholarship (visits to the Fowler Museum, and others with excellent ethnic collections, or serious study into indigenous arts) .... "tribal" grooves! However ... geniuses and scholars are followed by imitators, who are imitated, who are copied, who are plaigerized, and on and on .... until precious little is left. Discount drug stores have McTribal stick-on McMehndi decals. That's not unusual, really. Such has always been the case, though in previous centuries, it wasn't so fiercely consumer driven. I wonder what the "trendspotters" have snapped in their digicams to sell back to us today, remade in shrink-wraped, sanitized, plaigerized, dumbed-down, discounted, sold as a treat in a box of corn flakes. Something, that once was an interesting, sincere, innovative, individual gesture. I hope its not harquus.
