Now I know why!!! posted by Lauren on October 26, 2001 at 13:29:42: :: Now, is there any (reasonably inexpensive) way to find out what terps : are in that paste so I can make it myself? Sniff it. If there's a pine-sol sort of smell, they're using straight terpineol. If it's a medicinal mentholatum sort of smell, it's likely cajaput. If there's a muskiness, probably tea tree. Of couse, all that lot simply depends on the available terpineol sort of molecules .... and knowing that, you should be able to reverse-engineer several variants. The "peel off" characteristic seems strongest with Tea Tree ... the one with the highest level of terpineols. It penetrates to a very specific depth, and might be altering the keratin structure of those cells a bit. ("tans" them, I thin) I doubt if that's any reason for concern, its just some external layer skin cells that are long dead anyway. They are pushed up to the top, day by day, and slough off as a group. You wouldn't normally notice your skin cells coming off as you wash or scratch ... but they do. This time you see it because they're a different color, and they do seem bound together a bit.
