If you want to get serious about this get something like Photoshop (a mere $6-700) which is a standard in the design industry or Fireworks ($300) which is not as versatile as Photoshop but great for compressing images for the Web. I use both of these and they are indispensable. Probably too much for what you need right now. Also, when you are scanning you usually have the option to scale the image when you scan it. Scale it down to 50% or even 25% and then crop it if necessary, either in your scan program or in a photo editing program. Some scan programs are lame and don't give you those options, so then your only option is to fix the images in the image editing program. Large images are a problem whether sent via email or posted on a website. Images on a website should ideally be no larger than 15K (tho this can be gotten around if you have thumbnails that can be clicked on to view a larger image). If you are sending images via email they can be bigger, but not much. Just think of the poor person waiting for the email to download on a 28.8 modem. Yikes!
