They were using one of several Moroccan/Egyptian commonly used North
African ultra-dark techniques, and they had fresh henna growing
nearby.

The squiggles are calligraphy.

There isn't a better drawing that I know of, but there are
cross-references in literature that mention women using calligraphy in
their henna patterns and embroidery.
