Henna was such a ubiquitous hair colorant in the 19th century that "henna" became almost a generic term for hair stain. Indigo has been used with henna to stain hair black, possibly from Babylonian times. In the 19th century, when indigo mixes were imported for hair, they were termed "black henna". The name stuck. There are still hair products with henna and or indigo available that will make hair raven's wing blue/black. It's all natural and as far as I'm aware, the indigos are harmless. The indigo/black henna labeling confuses people, and that's a shame. I'd actually like to know more about how indigo is used... never had much success with it myself.
