Woading at Brushwood, July 2008

Click HERE to download a PDF gallery of woading .... several pictures of Ancient Blue body art done last week at Brushwood Folklore Center by Catherine Cartwright-Jones (me)
And a photography of the woading work by Roy Jones
I gave Ancient Blue history/science/techniques every day for a week, and had 8 - 20 people attending every day. I "blued" about forty people through the week. Alot of the work can't be shown here, because we worked at a clothing optional campground, and people mostly took that option, especially to have a full body piece done. Many people took Ancient Blue back to their campsites and friends, and I hope they'll turn up here to share their work!
Again, skin which has not been exposed to the sun takes stain best!
Skin which has lotion, sunblock, perspiration or oil on it has to be completely cleaned with dishwashing liquid before doing the blue.
Working into furry zones isn't nearly as bad as I thought ... I did some men's thighs that came out VERY well, but there was no point in trying to blue into the adjacent deeply forested areas. As long as the patterns are fairly bold and large, hair isn't that much of a problem.
Suntanned skin ... won't take blue stain worth a durn.
Skin which has had tinea versicolor infections ... the blue takes much better on "yeasted" skin than on healthy skin.
Stretch marks take blue OK.
Scars resist blue.
