Indigo at Festival
Posted on: 02/21/2009 11:48 PM
I've been invited by my local Scottish Highland Festival to do indigo. I've been brushing up on my skills using watercolors and am now at the stage to work on some victims. I'm feeling pretty comfortable with the technique and flowyness of indigo versus henna.
Anyhoo, I've decided to take the gig and wondered if anyone could give me some words of wisdom when it comes to indigo in a festival setting. I plan on doing small to medium designs. Nothing like Catharine's brushwood work. Mostly simple knotwork, dragons, and viney floraly things. I'm starting out slowly so as not to make an ass of myself. I've got three months to prepare...
Thanks in advance
Victoria

How exciting!
Be brave I'm sure you wont make a fool of yourself. With any luck Catherine will stop by and give you some advice she has the most festival experience with blue.
Personally with indigo I have found that the larger you can work the easier it is to control. Will it be warm where you are in three months? You don't want to be splashing indigo on clients clothes it's so much easier if people are wearing less stuff.
Best of luck! If I think of anything helpful I'll add to the thread.

As long as you have plenty of running water and some dishwashing liquid, you're good to go! A heap of old towels helps. And ... people absolutely LOVE this once they see it!
Every person who has had me both henna and woad them ... prefers the experience and look of woading.
There are two great body parts to work at a festival
A leg, from thigh down to ankle is absolutely your best shot. Ask your client to take off their shoes and socks, and work a big, fast, flowing design all the way down. Rinse. Repeat.
For guy legs .... I found out, to my suprise, that working into hairy body parts is no problem at all! Less hair is better, but its really no problem.
Inner forearms, or up to the shirt sleeve is your second best ... its easy to rinse them.
Body ..... the results are so beautiful, but you'll totally soak what they're wearing when you rinse.
Offer: spirals, knots, vines, and dragons. they whip out really easy.
Alex is right: BIG IS BEST! Don't do little diddly things. The mistakes show up too much. The larger you work the easier it is!!!!! Its faster, and the patterns come out better. And your clients will be sooooooo impressed.

I got my indigo today. Thanks for the fast shipping. My old stash had oxidized. I'm now busy honing my skills. I will post my designs for critique.
I spoke with my Scottish Fair and they assured me that I will have access to running water via a hose. I guess we'll deal with the draining bit later. I plan on bringing a couple of dishpans to collect the water if need be. I'm hoping there will be a lot of kilts so that woading will be easier. The event is May 9th so it should be warm during the day and then cool at night.
One quick question: How can I reduce the staining when washing. The new crystal is really potent and I noticed some staining when I scrubbed.

Where are you located? I'm in the Portland, Oregon, area, and I'm fairly involved with the local Scottish community. I'd love to experience woading firsthand!
A question for Catherine, or anyone who happens to know. Is the indigo that you use the same indigo crystals that is commonly used to dye wool? If so, I've got some of that right here to experiment with, and I would LOVE to, lol. Of course, I don't want to until I hear for sure, since I sure to don't want any horrible chemical reactions or anything.

Marcy, I'm in Minneapolis/St. Paul Minnesota. I grew up three hours north of Portland though! I hope to get out there again soon...after festival season...

Reducing staining when rinsing ......... spray bottle with dishwashing liquid/water mix. cleans it up instantly! Spritz generously.
