Knotwork Patterns help
Posted on: 03/03/2009 12:05 PM
I have never before done any blue. I would love to do so but I am a terrible artist. I am wondering are there any patterns I could trace that would help me do so? I found only a few patterns here and they are more artistic that what I am looking for, just some simple knotwork. Or would some of the henna books be a better bet?

The thing I've found is that blue is not precise. Henna patterns just don't work. Buy a cheap water color set and practice laying down a light wash of a pattern and then a second application of the same color, just darker the same as you do indigo. Indigo lends itself to non-structured images because it's so free and flowy. It's harder for me to keep my design tight than it is to let it flow all over.
Of course, I'm still working on my forms too.

First thing to do is gain confidence with a brush. There is no way around that, any hesitation will allow the dye to oxidise on the brush before you have made a mark.

Once you are comfortable with watercolour on paper try using a water soluble pencil to roughly sketch the key lines of your pattern before you mix the dye. A lower leg would be a good stating place.

Best, A
