Indigo Dyed Jeans, strange question...
Posted on: 11/09/2007 08:10 PM
Hi all,
I frequent the hennaforhair forum often, but thought this would be the most appropriate place to post a very odd question ... I recently bought a pair of jeans that came with a tag stating the were dyed with indigo and therefore must be washed before wearing with light colors as the indigo my leach. Which I did.
However, since I bought these jeans, I have not been able to wash out the color enough to keep the indigo from leaching onto and dyeing my legs a light blue.
Even weirder, I have noticed a funky smell - that seems to have attached itself to my car seat and office chair - I'm not even sure I can explain the smell, I guess musty or moldy/musty would be close. It is very noticeable and lingering.
Does this make any sense at all to anyone?

Hi, Indigo dye does not bind to cotton in any way it colours cloth by getting trapped in the matrix of the fibres. The extra dye that is still free rubs off easily, this is called crocking. It's very common with indigo, it happens when the fibre resists the dye and the indigo has not properly penetrated the fabric or if the chemistry of the dye vat is slightly off the optimum pH. Crocking can continue for a long time depending exactly how much free dye you have there.
The pong might be the fabric, I used to have a lovely garment that smelled like a goat...I had to get rid of it in the end. That was an undyed item so the niff could not be blamed upon the dye. I have noticed in stores some natural cotton and silk clothes have a strong goaty smell. Good luck with that!
Best, A
