applying henna to hair????

my sister bought me a couple of packets of henna from India. I want
to apply to my hair but she forgot the proper proportion mix of water
and henna. Does the mixture need to sit in the refrigerator for a
while before applying it to the hair? And then..how long do I let it
stay on my hair?
