Deepyl ridged toenails won't take up henna

I tried to henna my toenails yesterday but the dye didn't take at
all, and I mean at all. My toenails are all ridged and grooved from
years of gymnastics. I read on this forum that painting toenails
interferes with henna, but I have probably worn toenail polish only
three or four times in my life. What should I do for my deeply ridged
toenails?
