I apply henna to wet hair -- just washed so there aren't extra oils to
interfere. Then I coil my gooped up hair on top of my head, put on a
plastic bag, secure and sit in the sun or ride the exercise bike for
about a half hour. If I think it might drip, I'll turban a towel on
top of everything.
One of my co-workers hennaes her hair dry. Pretty much the same
method. Her hair is beautiful.
I'd try a little henna mix on hairs from your brush to see if weird
things will happen -- someone mentioned that trick a little earlier.
