I scrape off what I can and use oil to rub the rest off, but I get
the impression that the water washes the remnants of the paste off,
and if the remnants stay longer they will continue to release the
dye. Or maybe I am just imagining it.
Speaking of dark vs. light henna, I have a client who gets upset when
the stain is brown...she prefers orange, says it goes better with her
skin tone. So she doesn't let me do the parts of her body where the
henna turns brown. Go figure!
