In Bunia, it was particularly important to kohl the eyes on the 14th day of the month (lunar month, the full moon day) (like tonight!) because a lady was particularly apt to cast or recieve the evil eye! (no, don't ask me where Bunia is, I'm just quoting the book cited below). One of the traditional purposes of kohl around the eyes is to prevent a woman from casting the evil eye, as well as warding off blances of the evil eye. Henna has much the same traditional purpose .... Solomon said; Proverbs VI:25, "Neither let her take thee with her eyelids" ...referring to to the fear of being taken by a woman's evil eye...... One of the propositions in the Henry Field book, "Body Marking in SouthWest Asia" is that henna, harquus, kohl and women's traditional tattooing are all part of the same tradition and mythos that go back to the same origin, in the eastern Mediterranean. I just hennaed, but I don't have on any kohl. Will bifocals do?
