Henna Origins?

Hey all. I'm doing a bit of henna research and it's a bit tough with
so many do-it-just-for-the-look-no-explanations pages out there.
Everyone here seems pretty knowledgable so I'm guessing someone's
gotta know. :) Where exactly did henna originate? Doesn't it have
any kind of religious meanings to some cultures, and if so, does
anyone really know how they've reacted to henna in pop culture?
