My particular interest is Moroccan henna so if you want to hear that perspective, please visit my web page at the link below. I have written about some of the Moroccan traditions involving henna as well as the meanings behind the use of henna and various designs. As for your question about how they regard henna's inclusion into pop culture, in Morocco they take it quite well and are delighted. I have yet to meet anyone offended by westerners (non-Muslims specifically) wearing henna, even with distinctly tribal patterns. As a tourist you can get henna done everywhere in Morocco. This may or may not be the same in other hennaing countries. I recently read an article from an indian organization protesting certain facial painting worn by Madonna. They said that such painting is done by chaste and pious women which they thought was incongruous with Madonna's image. Many seemed to have taken it as a cultural affront. I have read other magazine articles from the Indian press, especially here in the US. They seem generally amused and bemused at the acceptance of henna/mehndi here in the US.
