I've been drooling over this book in the KSU library for 10 years ...
and Kenzi just told me it's at Barnes and Noble dot com .
Whooooaaaahhh.
I don't know if this book is widely known, but I'm totally in love
with the photographs here! It's a collection of "French Post Cards"
from the French North African colonies in the late 1800's. The women
are stunningly beautiful, their clothing, harquus, tattoos and henna
are magnificent. Some are just regular ladies. Most are "singing
girls" and there are several pictures of their instruments, too ..
others are more clearly prostitutes (but seem pretty comfortable with
it as a career choice). Malek Alloula used the book as a platform for
a rant that I personally find rather tiresome ... IMHO .... If you're
into bellydance or tribal costuming, period henna or other .... GET
THIS BOOK!
