You know, I had my father pick that book up for me at his university's
library.. funny, only three people had taken it out before me.. once
in 1970, once in 1990, and once in 96. kinda sad, kinda funny...

: I've been drooling over this book in the KSU library for 10 years
...
: and Kenzi just told me it's at Barnes and Noble dot com .
: Whooooaaaahhh.
: I don't know if this book is widely known, but I'm totally in love
: with the photographs here! It's a collection of "French Post Cards"
: from the French North African colonies in the late 1800's. The women
: are stunningly beautiful, their clothing, harquus, tattoos and henna
: are magnificent. Some are just regular ladies. Most are "singing
: girls" and there are several pictures of their instruments, too ..
: others are more clearly prostitutes (but seem pretty comfortable
with
: it as a career choice). Malek Alloula used the book as a platform
for
: a rant that I personally find rather tiresome ... IMHO .... If
you're
: into bellydance or tribal costuming, period henna or other .... GET
: THIS BOOK!

: "The Colonial Harem" (Theory and History of Literature Series)
: In-Stock: Ships 2-3 days.
: Malek Alloula,Wlad Godzich (Translator),Myrna Godzich (Translator)
/
: Paperback / University of Minnesota Press / November 1990
