: Consistently, when I try to dab my : designs with the lemon/sugar mixture : to fix them, the henna gets mushey : and smudges - or even falls off. I'm wondering what source of henna you're using...there may be some additive or variation in it that causes this. Or, perhaps, you're rehydrating it too much. I let henna dry until it feels "leather hard"..(a potter's term) then gently dab at it with lemon or lime juice on a cotton ball. When I have brushed lemon juice on, I have occasionally overdone it and it's gotten runny... Some of my more impetuous students will grab a lemon and squeeze it on the henna, and that makes a mess.... Try instead, if you're feeling that the lemon/sugar is an uphill battle, wrapping the "leather hard" hennaed skin in cling wrap and taping it shut...(do take care to not dislodge the henna) and leave it overnight wraped. Your sweat will act as a grand mordant for the dye, and the plastic keeps it in place very well. That works in Nigeria, it works in Akron, Ohio...maybe it'll work for you! If you want to stop by www.mehandi.com , try one of our "minikits" and see of our henna gives you the same difficulty.
