As I recall, marble is alkaline, or at least it certainly reacts with acid (marble statues everywhere are getting trashed with acid rain). I think that the marble is very likely to have caused your problem. Also .... everyone I know of has had at least one absolutely inexplicable experience with henna just refusing to cooperate. That may be why prayers, incantations and superstitions get attached to it.
