insanely off-base! The mix was fine -- nicely acidic and the henna
was only slightly stale, but the instructions said to leave the paste
on for half an hour!

Leave the paste on overnight for best results. And be sure to wrap up
that design with some cotton, toilet paper, bandages, whatever to
1)seal in the henna close to your skin for better contact and warmth
2) keep the henna crumbs from getting all over your sheets (they will
stain any natural fiber if damp...)
