Althletes are creating an excellent environment for henna, just like those hard-working peasant women used to with all their toil and drudgery. Sweat is acidic (some people are even more acid than others) and helps to release the tannins - that's why we all wrap ourselves up and suffer through crinkling noises overnight. If you have an area of skin that is being rubbed, your skin will react by thickening the upper layer of the skin with keratinized structures. Keratin is a protein, and proteins are what your body contributes to the henna reaction. Not to mention the fact that those althetes are cranking their body temps up nice and high with all that work.
