If you have need of a good amount of paste, or if you are a fan of frozen paste, try a mini food processor. For a very small amount of paste, this will not work because the blades won't touch your mix. I like to use it for big batches though. I run the food processor a bit with just the sifted powder in it, to make sure it's nice & fine. Then slowly drizzle in other ingredients. Letting it run a while at the very thick paste stage gets out all the lumps. You can then thin as desired & your paste will remain smooth. Added bonus: the friction warms the paste w/out cooking it, jump-starting the dye release process. As s/one else mentioned, this is the chef-like approach to avoiding lumps. Sift and cream all lumps before you add too much liquid.
