I've now been hennaing my hair for about 5 years now, and only do it about every six months. I've just redone my roots (yesterday) with 100g of leftover Castle Art henna which was rather old and had not been stored very carefully (it had been sitting in our garage). I don't think henna does the hair any harm, and it certainly seems very shiny today. I find it feels a bit dry when I first rinse the "mud" off but I always condition straight after and have no ill effects. Since I always wash my hair with a harsher-than-usual shampoo before hennaing (to get the grease out of the roots) I suppose it's not surprising it feels a bit icky at first. I also put conditioner on the ends to ensure a more even take, otherwise I get mousey roots and orange ends :-) I do get split ends (my hair is shoulder-blade length) but no more since starting hennaing. I wonder if the excellent condition of Catherine's hair is partly due to her protecting it from sun and wind by keeping it in a bun (chignon/twist) much of the time? I must say it was a joyous surprise to see the full, glorious length of it :-) Yesterday's root-touch-up was quite a shock actually. I usually use commercial hair henna, put moisturiser on the hairline and slap it all on, than about 20 minute later when I've got a head that looks like something out of National Geographic, wash off all the splats. However, with even *old* Castle Arts henna, by this time the splats had got a fairly good take :-( I was considering adding lemon etc to the mix but I sort-of chickened out. Lucky - I got a good, strong colour anyway, partly due to my Mum calling me just as I was about to take it off!!!! (I start off with light brown hair which is reddish in some light conditions). You'd recognise me in the street, I'm the one with the copper-red hair, orange ears and strange glow around the forehead :-) Fiona
