Just to back up Catherine's comment. I have correspondance with a US doctor who said the PPD reaction they saw was a deep seated allergic reaction, rather than a chemical burn. Different people react in different ways. Unfortunately, some people don't get a visible reaction at all, which is why PPD didn't get thrown out on day one. But, even those who don't get a visible reaction are probably still suffering the internal organ damage. The Material Safety Data Sheet which Catherine linked to tells you all you need to know about that. It is nasty stuff, and just because you don't get a skin reaction, it doesn't mean it is safe. The mutagen rating alone is enough to say "steer well clear". There's enough ways to get cancer that you can't avoid, without adding in things that you can avoid. It is doubtful that you're reacting to indigo. At least, I've never heard of anyone reacting to indigo. I've also never heard of anyone getting a decent black stain with indigo. Short lived blue-grey splodge more like.
