Not only do I enjoy applying and recieving henna I love tattoos and
the surrounding experience as well. I often talk with customers about
the differences, mainly I believe mehndi/henna is about gatherings,
contact and celebration. Often involving groups of people and looked
at in a transitory way and used to mark a 'feeling', mourning,
celebrations of weddings, menses, and are used in cycles, etc. Tattoos
are used to separate you from another, by ritual rights of passage
often earned by extreme 'manliness' and marking adulthood. Tattoos
mark you as a lower or upper caste in your social system and are
treated with respect and reverence while forming bonds between groups
coming of age at the same time.
I've found Americans can grasp these differences and will usually walk
away proud of their mehndi, not their temporary tattoo.
Anyway, just my two cents.
Jessica
