You should probably get paid something but focus on getting free advertising out of it. Rates for private parties really depend on your local market. In NYC rates tend to be higher than other big cities and a lot higher than smaller cities. I am currently charging $60/hr for parties plus travel costs and travel time but one of the henna artists I do henna with says I should charge more. She charges $80/hr. I think she is a better artist than I am so I feel a little strange charging that much. She says that it's not just the time you spend on the client that counts but also the prep time so $80 is pretty fair. I am always afraid that such a price will scare people away but I think a lot of it has to do with one's feeling of worth, in oneself and one's work.
