Once and for all... the "HENNA IS A SIN" argumentPosted by BarefootSophie on July 27, 2001 at 17:56:37: In reply to: not really rude but... posted by Willowhawk on July 27, 2001 at 17:10:13: : I think so far I have been pretty blessed. What I consider the: rudest thing was the one and only time I paid for someone to mehendi : me, a man stood there blathering on to his kids about how it was a : sin to do it...blah blah blah. For goodness' sake... if you're going to be dogmatic about something, AT LEAST BE WELL INFORMED ABOUT IT. He's apparently drawing his mistaken conclusion from the snippet of a verse in the OT where it says "do not make tattoo marks on your bodies..." They always forget the next part: "...for the dead." When I hear people -- it's usually men -- using that argument, I reach over and touch the bare sides of their faces, and ask them, "What about the next verse?" (It says it's equally naughty to shave your sideburns.) CONTEXTUALLY -- and context is a very big deal -- the reason those things were issues to the Israelites is because that's what the native groups around them were doing, and if you ever have to go to battle with a neighboring tribe, you don't want your countrymen to mistake you for the other guys. So once and for all... even for Christians, so long as it does not go against your conscience, TATTOOS AND HENNA ARE NOT A SIN. Sophie, who will now come down from her soapbox for a bit...
