There is NO natural black henna; periodPosted by Rupal on September 8, 2001 at 00:24:43: In reply to: REAL Black Henna?? posted by Rosemary on September 7, 2001 at 23:49:33: Though the woman may have claimed that black henna can be obtainednaturally, I wouldn't believe her. Henna companies formulating black henna essentially incorporate all the "black henna" chemicals (including PPD) into the powder they create, so that it is nearly indistinguishable from regular powder. Usually, black henna powder is brownish or grey-ish, rather than bright green. Thus, the fact that she only mixed her henna means nothing. It moreover indicates that there are probably chemical additives in her henna; natural henna usually requires an acidic environment in order to release its dye (people often use lemon juice to initiate this dye release). The "natural" color for henna is red. In general, beware when you read the label "natural" on any product you buy. Coal is natural. Hemlock is natural. Many, many things are natural, but naming them as such does not indicate that they are safe. ~Rupal
