(okay, I figured out a couple things, bear with me,) posted by Lauren on November 2, 2001 at 12:51:06: Hi Lauren,I am wondering if you may have had people climbing through the windows if you had advertised your party on college campuses, some social service agencies with large or exclusively female client bases and at some book stores. I am doing a wellness (stress reduction) workshop next Thursday at Pittsburgh Action Against Rape for a fraction of what I usually charge for my expressive arts workshops. The participants will learn something about the history and tradition hf henna, how to mix paste, have a chance to apply their own design and leave with their own J-bottle filled with henna paste and a pack of henna powder...plus recipe and instructions. Also they will have my card. The agency pays for all of the supplies and my fee is additional. I go to their site because it is just more central than where I am. But the same henna party idea can take place anyplace and I think that social service agencies with client bases that can really benefit from stress reduction techniques are really an overlooked source for booking workshops and opportunity to educate people about henna as well as your business as a henna artists. I know things are different in every location. Here the education about henna is the work that must first get done. I also am talking up nonprofit agencies and social service agencies because most of them are really understanding the benefit of wellness programing and all have some money available outreach programing. None will want to pay you more than $125.00 for your henna workshop fee but most will gladly use money from their "supplies and materials" budget line item to pay for the supplies and material you will need for their clients. This is also a great opportunity to book workshops with staff members of these agencies who might hop at the chance to learn the henna skills themselves so that they can teach their program participants how to henna. And of course they will come back to you for more henna powder. Given my fees for my regular workshops, this comes off as quite a bargain to agencies I have contracts with or have contracted with in the pass. The benefit for me is my ceramic workshops are soooo supply intensive that henna workshops are a breeze compared to preparing for the ceramic workshops. But also I am a strong believer in making such workshops available to people who ordinarily could not afford to attend unless a agency paid for it. Maureen
