I have two books of paintings, one Indian, which clearly shows finger dips and palms reddened on women and gods, and one Persian, which has only a couple with women in it, and strangely enough, none of them have discernible henna at all. At any rate, I haven't been able to find pictures that would let me see an actual, detailed design in the same way that you can see the blackwork patterns in Holbein's paintings. I know they must exist, and I've seen some of them, but I'm at a loss as to where to find them again. I was hoping to find some online, printable pictures, but a suggestion of a reasonably easy to find book would be great. What I'd really like is some actual written evidence of henna use aside from pictures. Somebody on here a long time back mentioned Roman cargo manifests listing henna as a trade good. A recipie would be great, or a description of a period Night of the Henna. I am willing to do my own original research, and to draw my own conclusions based on available evidence, but redoing what's already been done solely for the sake of having done it always struck me as needless.
