mix up enough paste for a j-bottle and a smidge more for a refill,
but for the show I mixed up several ounces worth. Straining so much
more henna than I was used to, I made an ackward mess - which I
figured accounted for the terrible straining results I had when I
used the paste. I had pulled like MAD trying to force a whole bunch
through the stocking at once and ended up with gobbledy gook in my
paste. (Next time I'll be patient and do a little at a time, even if
it takes all day, I swear!)

That's the only time I've ever had trouble with the stocking strain
method though, and it did result in a big old gunk pile in the bottom
of the toe, kind of like you described only mine wasn't dry.
