Unexpected Red StainsPosted by Lezard on November 13, 2001 at 21:03:09: Today I saw the stains on my friends palm which I did yesterday. They were a bright shade of red, turning a reddish brown at the bottom of the palm, where the skin is thicker. I use Shama Dulhan Moghlai Mehandi powder. Usually I add just lemon juice, sugar & Tea Tree Oil. It turned out dark brown. But I have only half a lemon to make the paste, so I tried something else in the kitchen, I toss some tamarind, 1 lipton tea bag, chopped 2 okras, a handful of cardamon, a handful of clove and brew them for about 30 minutes. After mixing the strained brew to the henna powder, it was left to sit for 8 hours, I added tea tree oil and let it sit for another 8 hours. Maybe the additional ingredients make the henna go RED. Any similiar experience? (BTW on the packet of henna, there are recipes to make different color stains such as red, darkest brown, reddish brown, brownish black & blackish. The recipe for reddish goes like this. Take 2 tbsp of tea powder, I tsp of methi Powder (? what is methi powder), 1 tbsp of Eucalyptus oil and 3 tbsp of tamarind juice and boil for 20 mins. Mix the above decotion with Mehandi powder to make a paste. Allow to settle for 30 mins to 1 hour. Add 1 tsp of vinegar before use.) The only similarity from the recipe and what I actually did was tamarind, tea and boiling for about 20 - 30 minutes. But the stains were a completely different colour from the usual lemon juice & EO mix. A genuine surprise. Thank heavens that the red stains were beautiful on both of my friends palm. Other recipes call for incomprehensible things like kala lavang tel, nilgiri tel, rosa oil, Shama Tea Oil, white Lavang tel, Shama elaichi oil. I think these are just the pronounciation of the ingredients in their native language....Maybe Hindi, Maybe Tamil. Anyone knows what they are? Me and Jewel were baffled. (BTW I am Chinese and Jewel is Malay.)
