: Actually, for a Moroccan man, being caught with henna (apart from : night of the henna) would be EXACTLY like getting caught wearing : women's underwear! There is a tradition of eunuchs and gay : transvestites as sex workers (hennaed, of course) that is widespread : across the Middle East and Nort Africa and has been so since 500 BCE : ... I keep finding more written sources on that, and a friend has old : pictures of curiously angular "belly dancers" from a century ago. Men : are exhorted to be conspicuously manly in these countries ... any : appearance of feminitity may remind them way too much of these fellows : they do not wish to be mistaken for. Thanks for the historical insight into my husband's reaction. The above confirms what I suspected. I have tried to appeal to him to let me do henna on him showing him men with tattoos and henna, but he's adamantly opposed to it. Of course, Islam forbids tattoos so that more many approach to body decoration is closed to him as well. And I don't think that he looks at non-Moroccan men wearing henna and thinks ill of them...maybe just figures what they don't know can't hurt them. ;-)
