Actually, for a Moroccan man, being caught with henna (apart from
night of the henna) would be EXACTLY like getting caught wearing
women's underwear! There is a tradition of eunuchs and gay
transvestites as sex workers (hennaed, of course) that is widespread
across the Middle East and Nort Africa and has been so since 500 BCE
... I keep finding more written sources on that, and a friend has old
pictures of curiously angular "belly dancers" from a century ago. Men
are exhorted to be conspicuously manly in these countries ... any
appearance of feminitity may remind them way too much of these fellows
they do not wish to be mistaken for.
