dark color, but didn't last

A couple of weeks ago I got all ready to try a design on the palm of
my hand. (My supervisor gets very touchy about visible designs, and
while on vacation I figured this was my chance for a hand design!)
After getting almost all ready, I realized my henna had been forgotten
by the stove, and the plastic bottle had begun to melt. Not wanted to
start over mixing, etc, due to the delay involved, I decided to use
the tube of Rani cone paste that I'd bought in an Indian/Carribean
market last year in London (For about $1!) The expiration date was
still several months away.
I did the design, applied Nu-skin spray, and wrapped and applied a
heating pad. After leaving this overnight, I removed the wrap and had
a lovely, very dark color. However, after only a couple of days I had
DRAMATIC fading. Other designs have not faded so quickly. Anyone have
any ideas why this might be?
