I have people asking me (with their nose high up in the air); If it's gonna fade away, why do it at the first place ? Then I'd go into my Henna Rant but I could'nt have said it better than what CCJ wrote :-). Then again, these people don't know and would never know the beauty of mehndi (even if you tell them). In my opinion, henna has NEVER been a tattoo. I guess it's different here 'cos henna has been around for a long time and most people, normally Muslims and Hindus (Malays & Indians) have known henna all their lives. As what I've told Catherine, henna has been used extensively especially for weddings here and there are no issue of it being ever resembled as tattoos. The again, henna was used mainly to paint the fingertips so it actually resembled NOTHING like a tattoo. After mehndi gained nationwide and worldwide popularity, more and more traditional mehndi designs have turned contemporary and tattoo-like. In a society where tattoos are still associated with "bad vibes" (gangsters, secret societies and such), mehndi/henna has always been looked upon as the favourable alternative to body decorating. I am a staunch Muslim (ie I do what I'm supposed to do and avoid the opposite) and no way my family would've approve of mehndi if they think it's tattoo. But my mom has been proud of me, advertising my "talents" to one and all, went all the way to make sure I have enough henna supply, shared her henna recipes, and put a price on every henna designs I do. In other words, in their opinion, mehndi is NOT a tattoo. As an artist, discovering this art was such a delight. As a restless artist, I like to see the designs on my hands/feet/other body parts change all the time :-). I appreciate tattoo as it is, but henna/mehndi is certainly a class of it's own. Peace ~Jewel~
