: By the way, I get certain glee out people that say I'm trying to
: "screw up" my courage to get a tattoo. I proudly joust
back, "Sorry,
: bub, I've already got a tattoo. I just like doing henna 'cause it's
: more versatile than tattooing..."

Ooooh! That's perfect! Too bad I don't have a tattoo to be able to
say that. I just try to poke fun at myself to disarm them a little;
I say something like "my tastes are too changeable to commit to a
tattoo...I can't even wait 3-4 weeks for my henna to fade before I
want to do a tattoo."

It takes a certain flexibility of mind to think of henna as a tattoo-
like thing, but also not a tattoo. Sometimes it is easier to explain
henna in terms of a temporary tattoo...then, when your questioner is
interested you can lay on all the stuff about centuries of tradition
in various countries, symbolic significance, healing properties etc.

Also, we must remember that some of these boyfriends of the henna
client may just be posing to show their girlfriends how tough they
are because they could handle a tattoo (but not childbirth!). And if
you want to get them for that posing you could say something about
how men don't usually have the patience for henna. Or just ignore
them!
