According to my dictionary, woad is a European herb(Isatis tinctoria)
in the mustard family whose leaves are used for dyeing things blue...

kind of like henna is an herb whose leaves are used to dye things
(skin, fabric, etc).

Yes, the Scots would have used woad. THe blue stuff used in the movie
was probably something more modern and less smelly.
