It it wasn't ppd, i think there was something like Mehlabiya oil in that henna mix that made those itchy bumps. In India, people will add a lot of stuff to make henna appear darker on dark skin (kerosene, gasoline ....the list is not very pleasant) and these things can make a nasty rash. Mehlabiya oil gives me raised welts. When there is a skin rashy scarry injury thing on our daughter (very tawny skin) her skin will stay dark after it heals for a year or more. She really has to be careful about cuts and abrasions, because the skin is marred for a long, long time after. I really don't think dark skin reacts differently to henna than light skin. If however, the person mixing the henna paste is trying to make the henna very dark for darker skin, they may add things to that paste that are harmful. Can you describe the smell of the henna paste that was used on you, and how long it was in contact with your skin to leave a stain? Also, where on your body was the henna placed? From all over the world, I've heard from people who have henna applied by "traditional" henna artists, and there have been absolutely appalling things in the mix! Indigenous and ethnic recipes aren't necessarilly safe recipes. Any time I hear of someone having problems with henna, I really want to try to find out why .... so the same problem doesn't happen again!
