IF you use only natural traditional henna, with nothing added but lemon juice, you and your baby will be very safe. However, henna does not take particularly well on a 9 month pregnant belly, because the skin is so new and glassy. Mix your own henna, don't use anything pre-made in a tube. Don't use any of the eucalyptus or "mehndi" oils that are being sold with the henna kits .... some of them are cut with nasty adulterants and are giving people ugly rashes lately. If you want to email me for pregnancy patterns, and traditions about henna during pregnancy, I'll be happy to help. I can also send you a chemistry rant for your doctor so he'll understand what the henna is. Also, I can email you instructions for doing henna on a belly to maximize the darkness of the stain without hurting you or your baby. If for any reason, you just feel uncomfortable with the henna, then use something else ... there are many other traditional ways to bless a big belly! Saffron, vermillion ... only do what you feel absolutely comfortable with. Mommys shouldn't have to feel worried.
