henna haircolour

so what's the deal with henna haircolour? by some, i am told that it improves the hair's texture and maintains a healthier condition...and by others, i am told that it is one of the worst things you could do for your hair--that it suffocates the hairshaft and thus dries it out, leaving it brittle and dry. i have been interested in alternative means of colouring my hair, but i don't want to damage it. so, what's the deal? does anybody please know for sure?
