my take on the terp/spaghetti sauce problemPosted by Zimra on September 10, 2001 at 05:11:38: In reply to: Terped paste success ... the spaghetti sauce paradigm, and a question for Zimra and Shanon posted by Catherine Cartwright Jones on September 9, 2001 at 15:13:44: : Is there something I'm doing that I'm not aware of, and haven't: communicated properly? I think you've got all the information down... I'm a bit baffled as to why people are having problems. I mean, at Sirius we used CA, Jamila, and Kenzi's henna, right? So it can't be the differences in henna powders... I have to say, I used terps all summer too, with great results. I usually use CA henna, but at Pennsic I didn't feel like sifting so I only used Jamila... and I saw some great results. My friends with toddlers had their fingers dipped and dots on their palms (what they dubbed "mother's henna" :-) and had it on only until it dried, and they had deep *brick red*/brown colors... though it faded VERY fast, was pale in less than a week. I've done the same thing with un-terped henna and the stain never got beyond dark orange. I also have to say that when I do the terp thing, I do it like I cook. A little of this, a little of that, no timelines or measuring. I mix up the henna, let it sit overnight or more, then add some terps, about "that much" as my mother would say, until the paste is nice and stinky, then I bag it up within a day or so and use it within a week or so... and I get consistently good results. The colors definitely are in the brown range, but they're nice and strong. So what am I trying to say? I guess the "polish grandmother cooking method" works well for me, not sure if other people will have success with it or not. I know we were much more casual about mixing and timeliness at Sirius... but I guess when you are explaining it to other people you have to include quantities and timing or they get frustrated. :-P Hey, maybe it's frustration and tension that are making the terp mixes not work for everyone? Maybe it only works if you're totally laid back and casual about it. :-P Or maybe it's just tweaky and weird, though there should be a chemical explanation for it. Hmmmm... art vs. science... who wins? Zimra, a bit punchy from being up all night and sleeping WAY late today... my circadian rhythym is shot to hell!
