The Taliban represents just one group of people (and is not terribly popular with its people at times) - remember that we have support from countries both Eastern and Western, and if just one of us makes a difference in how people view one another (in a positive way), it's important. Here in CT, a man tried to kill a Pakistani clerk at a convience store in the neighborhood where I did my student teaching. I haven't seen those kids in about a year, other than running into them at supermarkets and whatnot, but I'm hoping that the example I set for them as their teacher (if nothing else, I was "that Egypt lady" or "that henna lady") will help them see that random violence against a people is a bad idea. The kids had a lot of racial tension among them - it's a diverse area, and very poor - but we talked about that a lot, and I'm hoping it made an impression on them. Last night, I searched around the book stacks in the house (I have a lot of books) and found one that a friend had given me for my birthday a few years back: Every Eye Beholds You - a world treasury of prayer edited and annotated by Thomas J. Craughwell (ISBN 0-965- 059741). I'm not overly religious, but it was good to read it to see that the majority of people of all religions, present and past, want the same thing. Extreemists are a bad thing (much worse than my bad spelling), but we have several here in America. On my ABBAMAIL list, we were all appauled that Reverend Falwell (I believe, I could be wrong) came out and blamed the WTC disaster on gays and lesbians - that's just as intolerant as any terrorists. Okay, that's not sounding too optomistic, but I think if we look at people rather than groups, we can find and do some good. Anne : I am deeply saddened today, by both pieces of news. The taliban : leaders will meet tomorrow, to make the jihad official. : I wanted my life to be happy and normal, but now i realize that it : must not be so. I know i am very pesemistic, but what is the use in : being optimistic now? It would only be a lie. : ~Nick
