If you think praying is going to help you againstterrorist. And shame on you for implying that USA is some sort of way responsible for the deaths that occurred last week, that you bombed yourself. Shame. When a person says the United States "had it coming," what he or she means is that murder is a morally appropriate rejoinder to a perceived slight or injustice. To imply that bringing to justice people like Mussolini, Hitler, bin Laden, people who wish to exterminate whole cultures, to say that to go to war to save the Jews from concentration camps is the definition of stupidity, well that is a stunning comment. Praying for the dead and wounded: of course. But praying will not stop the killing Maureen. Bullying and prejudices against people because of religion, colour, sexual orientation, et cetera did not just start last week. It has been around forever. And it is really an issue that must be dealt with; is being dealt with. But we know – we the people of the free world, the people of democratic societies, we know that prayers will not stop that incarnate of evil that is people like bin Laden, or Carlos the Jackal. Vengeance is always a base desire; in this case it is also impractical. We obviously wouldn't wipe out an equal number of innocent civilians -- not if we wished to be just, and not if we wished to retain the moral high ground. And if we limited ourselves to taking out Osama bin Laden, we should find such retaliation neither commensurate with the wrong done to us, nor effective in preventing future atrocities. Culpable though he may be in this attack, and critical as he undoubtedly is to the terrorist cause generally, there are plenty more where he came from. We must fight a war against all terrorist. No one wants any of this. But September 11 should convince us that an all-out confrontation with international terrorism is unavoidable; that the threat is not manageable, but mortal; that the old adage, "kill or be killed," has acquired a terrible relevance. Today I will pray. I will pray that there is enough resolve in the people of the free world to stand up to these cowards who murder innocents with terrorist acts. Today I will pray the your President Bush and his allies will do whatever is required so my children can live without the fear of be attacked by terrorist while going to work, to school.
