Two weekends ago I worked a friend's henna booth at a tourist spot. We agreed that I would give her 50% of what I made. She told me that everyplace she ever worked at someone elses venue she had to give them 50%, so it was standard. So, she set low prices (her spot, her prices), I worked my butt off, we both paid an assistant (my sister, so I didn't really mind paying her-she worked hard), and I came home with only $10 more than my sister! For 8 hours of hennaing (half that time my friend was there working and making her own money as well) I made $110. I thought it was crappy. My friend was on vacation all week so I didn't get a chance to talk to her about it. I stored all the chairs, tables, supplies, etc.. all week and went out again last Saturday as she wasn't back yet. Well, I raised prices, put up boards with the designs on them (instead of having 3 huge books full of designs), all priced & numbered so my sister didn't have to tell people what everything cost, and I worked my butt off again and made twice as much in one day as I had the whole weekend before. Needless to say I was thrilled! Now my friend is upset that I didn't give her 50% like we agreed on (I gave her 30% which I think is alot more fair to me). I agreed to 50% before I knew how much work it would be for so little money! We still haven't really gotten a chance to talk about it, and she did say she was willing to negotiate with me as she wants me to do Saterdays from now on so she can go work somewhere else too. What do all of you think about the 50% cut for the venue owner when she is off working somewhere else?(she doesn't have to go elsewhere, it's her choice) IS 50% the industry standard, or is she putting one over on me? Or am I being selfish? HELP!!! I will be talking with her soon.
