Today I sat down with henna and syringe to try some designs so I could report back to you all here. In a word: practice. It was tough but I think it is possible to master this thing. When the henna flows it flows quickly so that lines usually start with a big blob (you can always wipe this off), but I am able to control it a little better so that the lines are straight and not squiggly. When the henna doesn't flow, it's a bit tough to get it going again. I think that the problem might be solved with a more professional syringe. This glue syringe is kind of flimsy and the plunger bends when you try to push it in. And the rubber stopper on the plunger sticks to the side of the syringe and then suddenly unsticks giving you a torrent of henna. The needle is a great size, gives a nice fine line. It's a standard needle without the point so you can fit it on a regular and possibly higher quality syringe. When everything is working optimally you can throw down nice long straight lines really quickly. I did some spirals and other various designs which were a little more tricky given the all or nothing nature of the henna flow. This might improve with a better syringe. Give it a try and let us know what you discover for yourself.
