Please, please don't use the word "tattoo" when explaining henna, I
think I prefer the words "decorative/ornamental stain" more. If you
mention henna for hair many people will pick up the association.

Another type of negative reaction you can get from strangers is the
one where people think you are co-opting their culture and traditions
and are highly offended. Once I gave such a person the henna rant to
the tune of " several thousand years and several contintents, so your
country doesn't own mehndi"....I think it is hard for some people to
reconcile my Scottish face and my hennaed hands. This is yet another
reason for me to keep away from Arabic/Sanskrit/Asian lettering in my
mehndi, because I don't want to offend anyone.
