Islam, which is the predominant religion in most hennaing cultures,
forbids marring the body with tattoos, but encourages the use of
henna, precisely because it doesn't not mar God's gift to us, but
shows it at its most beautiful. and perhaps that is what scares
people about henna (my mother included!) that it is somehow related
to Islam and indicates a belief in some infidel religion (sigh!) The
funny thing is that, thanks to Catherine's education on the subject,
we know that henna goes way back before Islam, Christianity and
Judaism, and maybe that is what is truly scary to some.
