I think the kind Natasha described were iron filings - they rust in air and that generates the heat. Definitely don't put those in the microwave, and make sure they get some air or you won't get full use. They also have an odor that clings a bit - not too bad, but useful to know about. The standard microwave kind can have almost anything - heat in microwave, it stays warm a while. There's another kind that crystallizes inside when you flex a small metal disk. These are amazing. You can re-melt them by boiling or microwaving, but I find the microwaving procedure is rather tedious. Oh - and I recently saw socks with electric toe-warmers and batteries.
